A new player in the iPhone family with innovations and compromises.
Apple is once again pushing the boundaries of technology and design, with the manufacturer introducing the new iPhone 16e, the spiritual successor to the SE series. This model brings many innovations, but also several compromises that have sparked mixed reactions. The iPhone 16e boasts a 6.1″ Super Retina XDR OLED display, which has replaced the outdated LCD technology. This display is ideal for watching HDR videos, playing games, or reading text with high sharpness.
The front of the device is protected by Ceramic Shield glass, which is tougher than any other smartphone glass. The back is equally durable, and the device has an IP68 rating, which means resistance to water, dust, and occasional drops. The design is simple and minimalist, available in matte white and black. However, the color options are limited, which may disappoint some users.
A new feature is the action button, which has replaced the classic silent mode switch. On the other hand, it lacks the Camera Control Button, which is available on higher-end iPhone 16 models. At its core is the latest A18 chip, which brings a 40% performance increase compared to the previous generation. This chip is complemented by a 4-core GPU with ray tracing support, taking mobile gaming to a new level.
Also new is the proprietary C1 5G modem, which is energy-efficient and ensures a reliable connection. Battery life is one of its biggest strengths. Apple claims the battery lasts up to 12 hours longer than previous SE models. The device supports wireless charging and charging via a USB-C connector, as the company continues to phase out the Lightning standard.
One of the key innovations is Apple Intelligence, an artificial intelligence platform that brings new communication and content editing possibilities. The “Clean Up” feature allows you to erase distracting elements in photos with a single touch. Siri now supports natural language thanks to its integration with ChatGPT, which simplifies interaction with the phone. Apple emphasizes privacy – most AI processes run directly on the device.
And if access to large artificial intelligence models is needed, Private Cloud Compute is used, which protects user data. Unfortunately, this technology is not yet available in the Slovak language. It is also equipped with a 48 MPx Fusion camera with an integrated 2x telephoto lens, which allows for zooming without loss of detail. Night mode and improved HDR processing ensure sharp and clear images even in low light.
The device supports 4K Dolby Vision video recording at 60 frames per second and offers spatial audio. Despite these improvements, it lags behind the higher-end models. It lacks an ultra-wide-angle lens, cinematic mode, and advanced portrait photography features. Nevertheless, the camera is of sufficient quality for average users. It also supports satellite connectivity, which allows for sending emergency messages and sharing location outside of Wi-Fi or cellular network range.
The device is also equipped with a car crash detection feature that automatically calls for help in case of an accident. However, these features are not yet available in Slovakia. Pre-orders for the iPhone 16e start on February 21, 2025, with sales beginning on February 28, 2025. However, the prices are higher than expected: €729 / $789 for 128GB, €859 / $929 for 256GB, and €1109 / $1199 for the 512GB variant.
Although the iPhone 16e offers modern technologies, its price is significantly higher than previous SE models. This has drawn criticism, especially in Slovakia, where the device is considered too expensive for an “affordable” model. The phone is ideal for users who are looking for a modern iPhone with powerful hardware and long battery life, but are willing to accept some compromises, such as the absence of MagSafe or advanced camera features.
Despite the higher price, the iPhone 16e is an attractive option for those who want a new iPhone without having to invest in more expensive models. However, only time will tell if it will be successful. Apple is trying to appeal to a wider audience, but the high price may be a barrier for many. Nevertheless, it is an interesting step in the evolution of affordable iPhones.
